In 1693 a Mennonite leader in Switzerland named Jacob Ammann believed the Mennonites were becoming liberal To preserve his faith he led a group of followers who believed that the Bible should be strictly interpreted This group became known as the Amish named after Ammann After fleeing to the Swiss mountains to avoid religious persecution in Europe they were welcomed to Pennsylvania by William Penn in the early 1700s Amish traditions continue in the communities living in 23 states and parts of Canada More than 23 000 Old Order Amish live in the surrounding Lancaster County area
