CHEMICAL EXAMINATION. Total Solids.—The amount of solid matter left on theevaporation of a given quantity of water will naturally varylargely according to the geological character of the localityfrom which it has come. The total solids of a potablewater consist mainly of calcium carbonate, sodium chloride, small quantities of nitrate and sulphate of calcium, and alittle silica, together with any non-volatile organic mattersthat may be present. If it is not desired to ascertain what the total solidsconsist of, but merely to learn their amount, it will besufficient to work on 50 or 100 , which should beevaporated in a platinum dish. The dish must be cleanedwith very fine pumice powder till quite bright outside andin; and the evaporation may be begun over a low gas-flame,but must be finished over a water-bath. As a temperature of 100° C. is not sufficient to expel allmdisture, the dish should then be placed in an air-bathand heated up
