We gather, then,that at the lectisteitiia lupiter and the gods in general were originally repre-sented by twisted bundles of herbs. These bundles seem to have been paddedand clothed as puppets ; for in 179 , shaken by an earthquake, the wool andwrappings attached to lupiter slipped off revealing his true inwards to the con-fusion of all present^.
