Photosynthesis, artwork. Photosynthesis is the process by which most plants convert sunlight into chemical energy. The process occurs in the green parts of the plant, especially in the leaves. It requires water (blue arrow at bottom), absorbed by the plant's roots, and carbon dioxide (red arrow), absorbed by the plant's leaves. A by-product is oxygen (blue arrow at top), which is released through the leaves.
