Engraving depicting Professor William Edward Ayrton's electric tricycle. 10 charged Faure accumulators were placed on foot-boards, S, and the motor fitted under the seat. By means of a commutator, C, worked with the left hand, the number of accumulators used could be altered, thus varying the speed of the machine.
