Oxford, England - 18 January 2020; no people in view. A beautiful gilded wood carving of Pan in St Mary's Passage, Oxford. This leads from the High Street to Radcliffe Square; you can see the dome of the Radcliffe Camera in the background. Pan was, of course, the god of the wild, shepherds and flocks in ancient Greek religion and mythology. As can be seen here, and like all satyrs, he has the body and face of a man but the hindquarters, legs, and horns of a goat. The distinctive cylinder-shaped Radcliffe Camera was designed by James Gibbs in neoclassical style and built in 1737-1749 to house the Radcliffe Science Library. It is now part of the world-famous Bodleian Library.
