Asia Nepal Kathmandu November 2003 Pashupatinath A sadhu holy man sits on the banks of the River Bagmati Situated 5 km east of Kathmandu near the airport the complex covers an area od 260 hectares with almost as many temples and religious monuments and has been designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO the temple of Lord Shiva Pashupatinath is one of the four most important religious sites in Asia for Hindu Shiva devotees Pashupatinath dedicated to Shiva the Destroyer is the holiest Hindu pilgrimage destination in Nepal The Pashupati Temple was only built in the fifth century and later renovated by Malla kings the holy site is said to have existed from the beginning of the first millennium There are several temples dedicated to other Hindu and Buddhist deities apart from the main one to Pashupati Behind the temples is the River Bagmati On the banks of Bagmati are raised platforms used as cremation sites for Hindus Although only Hindus are allowed inside the temple visitors can clearly see the temple and the activities performed within its premises from the banks of the Bagmati river
