D., and called the A4emorialMetabolic Clinic was opened in 1919. Thisunit has an individual stafT of doctors, nurses andlaboratory technicians. It is devoted exclusivelyto the study and treatment of a group of illnessesknown as metabolic diseases which are difficultto deal with. This group includes such con-ditions as nephritis, gout, diabetes, thyroid andother glandular troubles, etc. The expense ofmaintaining this department has been borne by 210. to S. at O X o»m oU Mcsi 03 cen > B a S A N r A B A R H A R A private donors and by the Carnegie Foundationfor the Advancement ot 7eaching, Dr. W. , late of Chicago, having been recentlyappointed to have control and direct this depart-ment. About this time a third wing was added tothe main building, given over entirely to theX-Ray department. The appointments of thisunit and its equipment are as excellent as any onthe coast and a physician specializing in X-Raywork devotes his entire time to this , physicians and the general public h-avethe advantage of accurate X-Ray advice. Very completely equipped clinical, chemicaland pathological laboratories h-ave been estab-lished. The clinical and pathological labora-tories employ three assistants working under thesupervision of a full time pathologist. Thechemical laboratory has tvv^o assistants and isunder the direction of a research chemist of na-tional prominence. A
