The mahoganytable with elaborately carved legs belonged to Lieutenant EdgarFreeman, 1789-1871. His line of the family became extinct whenhis daughter, Gertrude Freeman, died in 1914. In her will shebequeathed to me her fathers miniature and the tea service ofSheffield plate presented to him by his brother officers when heretired from the navy in 1828. A sketch of his life will befound on page 119. I make mention of these venerable householdeffects for the reason that I am now the only person living whoknows the history of the o1d pieces. I wish the record of thempreserved and I know of no better way to preserve it than toprint it in this little FRANCES MARIA ABBEY Widow of Joel Francis Freeman and donor of the Abbey-Memorial. From the statuette by Enid Yandell, donor and all of her four children were born in theWestern Reserve of Connecticut in Cleveland, Ohio. Alexander Freeman, 1807-1839, son of Joel Freeman, mar-ried Hannah Maria Low, a member of the Dutch family on whoseland Vassar College now stands, and a descendant of the Mott,Fort and Pell families. These were the parents of Joel FrancisFreeman, 1836-1910, of East Orange, N. J., who married FrancesMaria Abbey, daughter of Judge Seth Alden Abbey, and donorof the Abbey Memorial in Enfield. 118 Lieutenant Edgar Freeman, U* S, N.
