Over 800 homes and 400 commercial buildings in Kaiapoi were destroyed by, or demolished following the magnitude Earthquake that occurred on 3September 2010. The Fault-line (Greendale Fault), about 30kms West of Kaiapoi, had about 6m lateral displacement and 1m vertical displacement. Where the Fault Line crosses this road, the displacement can clearly be seen.
