Procida, the Prochyta or Prochyte of the ancients, like itssister-island Ischia, with which it appears once to have been con-nected , is of volcanic ariein. being comprised of pumice-stone and. of Naples. PROCIDA. 6. Route. 105 lava. It consists of two contiguous craters, which now form twosemicircular bays, their S. margins having been destroyed by theaction of the sea. A third and smaller crater forms the creek ofOhiaiolella, and a fourth the neighbouring island of Vivara, whichhas been separated from Procida by some convulsion of nature. Theisland is 2 M. in length, and of varying width; population 14,000,whose occupations are fishing and the cultivation of the vine andother fruit. The surface is somewhat flat compared with that of itsmore majestic sister-isle. As the island of Procida is approached, the most conspicuousobject is the fort, situated on the extremity. Below lies thetown of Procida, extending along the N. coast, partly built on thehigher ground above, and stretching thence towards the bay on theS. side. The white, glistening houses with their flat roofs presenta somewhat Oriental aspect
