Fear, fear, lest you may become more like to God earnestly that he would keep you fromfollowing so dreadful an example. ??>. STOE¥ V- THE TEMPTATION. Satan did not think it best to appear to Adam andEve as he realiy was, a wicked and horrible being,—an angel of darkness just come from his dreadfulprison-house. He became like a serpent, such asAdam and Eve had often seen, and of which theyhad no fear. He found Eve alone, and near the forbidden was at a distance in some other part of thegarden, taking care, perhaps, of the trees and plants,or gathering some fruit for food. The serpent, or rather Satan in the form of theserpent, spoke to Eve. He asked her, if God had in-deed said that they should not eat of every tree ofthe garden. Oh ! yes, said she, we may eat of the fruit of thetrees of the garden.
