The art has existedfrom the earliest ages ; butno nation has brought itto a higher degree of per-fection than the Italians ofthe 15th century. TheFlorentines especially haveproduced work of this kindwhich is unapproached ; theMedici chapel at Florencemay be particularly m-stanced. Figs. 443 and 444represent specimens of an-tique work. The Venetianmarquetry, derived fromPersia and India, is a fineinlay of ivory, metal, andwoods, stained to vary thecolour. This work is ingeometric patterns only.
