James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) image of the Orion Bar. This is a region of the Orion Nebula where energetic ultraviolet light from the Trapezium star cluster interacts with dense clouds of gas and dust. Within this image lies a young star system known as d203-506, which has a protoplanetary disc. A protoplanetary disc is a disk of dust, gas and other objects orbiting a star. In this disc, JWST was used to detect a carbon molecule called a methyl cation (CH3+). The presence of this molecule is important because it can readily form more complex carbon-based molecules, and all known life is carbon-based. Image captured by the JWST's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam).
