Fruit, large and oval; color, light green, with bloom; flesh, mod- erately firm, sweet, and good. Vigorous and very fruitful. A seedling of Houghton. Introduced and named by us in 1861. BLACKBERRIES. Blackberries are adapted to a great variety of soils, and will give a fair result on poor lands; yet to raise abundant and paying crops, good soil and liberal culture are necessary. The ground should be kept mellow by shallow cultivation, and heavy mulching is a great help,, keeping down weeds and retaining moisture, and preventing in part the effects of dry weather. Plant in rows six feet apart, and three feet apart in the rows, and when four or five feet high, pinch them back to cause them to throw out lateral branches; save a few of the strongest shoots for fruiting, and then carefully pull up all other suckers as they may appear.
