Baltimore, one of the four greatEastern cities, with a population of over200,000, is imposingly situated upon thePatapsco River, 12 miles from its en-trance into the Chesapeake Bay, andabout 200 miles, by these waters, fromthe sea. Built, as it is, upon hill-slopesand terraces, its appearance is, perhaps,more picturesque than that of any othercity in the Union. As seen from thewater, the climbing streets, crowned, atlast, by dome and spire; and, soaringyet, above all, from the crest of theloftiest eminence, in the heart of all,the tall marble column of the Washing-ton Monument, the effect is exceedinglyfine; and not less so the look-downupon the city and the surrounding land-scape, from the summit of this loftypile so proudly placed.
