Through thesong you could trace the chatter andwhir-r-r of the squirrel, but at thesame time it was a sweet bird-song,with none of the scolding, com-plaining note of the squirrel. Ihave taken pains to-day to see afriend, who has a cottage abouttwo miles from us at Hancock, andshe says she and her husband haveheard them, though not very often,as their cottage is situated more inthe open and other cottages arenear, while ours is surrounded bywoods, with no other house very tame and will go tothe neighboring housesfor nuts. Once the maidopened our front doorand a squirrel walked infor his breakfast. Someof them will take thenuts out of my hand,and even climb to myshoulder and from thereout to my wrist to getthem. They bury thenuts and come back forthem after a while. Itis wonderful how they can find the nuts they haveburied when people cannot.
