Johannes Petersen. Portrait of Johannes Petersen (1859-1928), Danish zoologist and inventor of fish tagging. In 1889 Petersen was appointed director of Denmark's shipborne biological station. He carried out a wide variety of experiments from the boat, including studies of plankton and oyster beds. He also began a programme of putting identity tags on hundreds of plaice, Pleuronectes platessa, and analysing where they were caught by fishermen. He found that the flatfish did not travel far and lived in relatively isolated populations. Petersen was able to show that this isolation led to distinct races of fish forming in different areas.
