Rusty electrical appliances left behind by the receding water at the badly damaged Ishinomaki 1 year after the 2011 tsunami

Ishinomaki (石巻市) is a city in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. It was among the most seriously affected by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Several tsunamis, up to about 10 metres (33 ft) high traveled inland up to 5 kilometres ( mi) from the coast. The tsunamis destroyed around 80% of the 700 houses in the coastal whaling port of Ayukawa. The Kadonowaki neighborhood was largely leveled. Approximately 46% of the city was inundated by the tsunami. On the 1st Anniversary of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, memorial services were held across Japan, especially at the affected areas. Many turned up to pay their respects to their loved ones, or in memory of the many victims. Flowers were laid in memory.
