The volume of insurance increased un-der his prudent, caref\il nianagemcnl and energy, and hesoon acquired a reputation for marked ability and for in-tegrity. In 1873 he severed his connection with the .MutualLife Insurance Company and accepted llic posilimi of Vice-President of the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company of 416 THE PASSAIC VALLEY Newark, which came to him unsolicited. In 1876 he re-signed this vice-presidency and was appointed the State.
