16/09/15 Kelvin Pell. ***Full story here: *** Triathletes have recently coined the term Ôbrick workoutÕ to describe their gruelling training regime when running, following tough sessions on their bicycles. But one group of workers have been using their very own Ôbrick workoutÕ for decades, without the need for lycra, personal trainers or lightweight bicycles. These men, 21 on every shift, each have to pick-up, inspect, and re-stack 18,000 bricks every day. Some wear gloves, while others pick up the red London Bricks with their bare hands C often four or five at a time at the brick works near Peterborough. Each brick weighs 2 kg C so each man lifts approximately 36,000 kg (almost 40 tons) every day on a four on, four off shift pattern. The brick works currently make million bricks each week.
