Some ofthe former are pictured riding into the conflict on finely caparisonedsteeds, flourishing broadswords or spears. Standards are borne ofIonian and other mercenaries, while bannerettes are conspicuouslyheld aloft to the right by the Romans, bearing the S. P. Q. R. in-scription of the old republic. Behind these appear forests ofspears, trophies and flags of the troops who are storming a walledcity—while the background displays a vast panoramic landscape,with river and distant hills and towns. The wide border is similar tothe preceding, the margin on the right side bearing monogram ofJ. Raes—weaver in Brussels, early seventeenth century.
