The leveris fitted with a notches on theratchet are devoted tothe rheostat and fourto braking. A for-ward motion of thelever releases thebrake and turns onthe current. A back-ward motion shuts offcurrent and appliesbrakes. To work therheostat a chain is con-nected to a rod from the lever. This chain passes undera pulley and works the plunger and spring carrying thecontact brush. The brake leverage, manifestly, can not. BRAKE AND CONTROLLER.
