Decoration on the exterior walls at Sheikh Saeed Al-Maktoum House in Shindagha, Bur Dubai. Dubai (UAE).
The Sheikh Saeed Al-Maktoum House, in the Shindagha Heritage Area of Dubai, was the former residential quarters of Saeed bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai from 1912 to 1958 and grandfather of the present ruler. It is now a museum that contains artifacts and images of pre-oil times, including excellent examples of wind towers that can be seen from the courtyard or the exterior of the building. Before the invention of air conditioners, inhabitants of the Middle East used wind towers to capture wind and cool their homes. The wooden cross bars in these tall structures were draped with wet cloths so the wind would cool as it blew into the homes in an early evaporative cooling scheme.
