GREENWOOD & BATLEY, LTD., LEEDS BRITISH HYDRAULIC MACHINERY convenient feature in the design is thelength of stroke of the side rams; thisis sufficient to allow the main ram to beremoved from the cylinder, or the cyl-inder from the press head, without dis-mantling the press. It will also be seen that the side ramscan be taken out by removing the splitcollars from underneath the crosshead, which leaves the rams free to be drawnthrough the cored holes in the entabla-ture, after which the side cylinders canbe taken away. The crosshead slippershave adjustable wearing surfaces, a veryimportant point in shell drawing presses, where the punch has to travel truly inthe axis of the die to ensure the walls ofthe shell being of equal thickness. In examining the illustration of thispress the side rams may appear undulypowerful, but it must be rememberedthat the punch may require as much asioo tons to withdraw it from the work, especiall
