The cause is concussion on hard ground, and it is mostcommon to heavy horses. It is largely Ossification of the Lateral Cartilages,i. Pedal bone. 3. 3. The lateral cartilages ossified. Treatment.—When the first sign of lameness appears,it may be arrested by the use of Ellimans, applied as forThoroughpin. HORSES. 51 CORNS. Corns in horses are bruises situated in the angle betweenthe bar and the quarter and generally on the inner side of thefore foot, brought on from concussion and pressure of the heelof the shoe on the part. The fault may be from the farriermaking the shoe too short, or from not having spread enoughfor the quarter to rest upon, but we think the fault is moreoften with the owner in allowing the shoe to remain on toolong in which case the crust grows over the outside of the shoeand the bearing is thrown on the part susceptible of bruises. In severe cases when there is much extravasation ofblood, great tenderness, suppuration or inclination to suppura-tion, the foot should be well soaked in hot water and poulticedfor a few days with linseed meal poultice, but
