They receive Germanicus on his triumphalreturn to Rome 17. Agrippina, his wife, assists him in takingoff his helmet, and his son, Caligula, stands behind him. The youngman who carries a trophy, is Drusus, son of Tiberius. In thelower portion are vanquished nations personified under the figuresof warriors dressed in the costume of eastern and western ftEMMA AUGISTEA, OF VIENNA. II. The Cameo of Vienna, or the Gemma Augustea, is not solarge as that of Paris, and presents but two scenes. It is su-perior as a work of art, and is in better preservation. It passedfrom the Abbey of Poissy to Germany, having been purchased byRudolph II. for 1200 ducats. It is considered the finest work inrelief extant. It has but two layers. Its shape is elliptical, 9 by8 inches. The subject is the reception of Drusus (father of Ger-manicus) after his victory over the Rhseti and Vindelici, as Jove, and Livia as Rome, seated on thrones, welcomethe hero and his brother Tiberius.
