Kirby Misperton anti-fracking protest camp in North Yorkshire.

Outdoor kitchen situated close to the entrance where visitors are offered hot drinks and snacks. Following a judicial review on the application by Third Energy to undertake fracking for shale gas in the Kirby Misperton area (Ryedale) of North Yorkshire, the High Court found in Third Energy’s favour in a judgement handed down on 20th. December 2016 and North Yorkshire County Council gave the company permission to frack a previously drilled well close to Kirby Misperton for shale gas. A protest camp, Kirby Misperton Protection Camp, was set up in a field on the outskirts of the village by environmental campaigners, calling themselves ‘protectors’ rather than ‘protesters’, with experience from Balcombe, Barton Moss and more recent campaigns together with overwhelming support from locals in the village and surrounding area of North Yorkshire. Residents on the site state that they have had over 1,500 visitors attend the site from many different areas of the country. Local campaigners have supplied many items for the camp such as food, tents, firewood, straw bails & pallets for building/insulation, clothes and sleeping bags. The camp has two towers at the entrance to the field which although covered in banners and signs, also hosts an aerial, solar panels and a dongle for wifi. The camp is powered using solar panels for lighting and currently (January 2017), a live broadcast, ‘fracking nightmare’, is broadcast each week from a studio on the site constructed from pallets and straw bails.
