By the usual method warps to be dyed with indigo are firstrun through a warp boihng out machine such as described onpage 998. In order to get the best or even good results inindigo dyeing it is absolutely necessary that this part of theoperation should not be slighted, and the cold water rinsecompartment which is furnished with the complete boilingout machine is a very important feature as by its use thewarps are left cool and moist and prevented from drying upbefore they can be run in the indigo. There are many varia-tions in the form of dyeing vat used and style of rigging forhandling the warps, but the indigo vats and overhead riggingshown in the following cuts, are used by many, if not most ofthe largest companies in the country doing this class of work. Indigo Grinding These machines are built in two styles, known as the hor-izontal such as shown in cut, and the vertical grinder. Thehorizontal grinder consists of a wrought iron C3dinder 50 60 in. face by 30 in. diameter, supported on iron frame anddriven by tight and loose pulley, pinion and gear. The cylin-der is provided with heav\^ iron cylindrical rolls, which revolvein the cylinder and grind the indigo. The vertical style of grinder consists of either a wroughtiron or cast iron tank with upright shaft driven through bevelgears from a horizontal shaft supported on hangers from theceiling. On the vertical shaft are cross arms with the neces- 1024 Atlanta, Ga., STUART W. CRAMER, Charlotte, N. The vertical grinder is built in three sizes, namely, withtanks 56 in. diameter by 18 in. deep, 36 in. diameter by 20 ,
