Eastern equine encephalitis virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus particles (Alphavirus sp., green) in the salivary gland of a mosquito. The virus is an arbovirus (arthropod-borne virus) and is transmitted to humans, birds, and horses through the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms in humans range from mild flu-like symptoms to inflammation of the brain, coma, and death.
