Children outside the Science Museum in Exhibition Road, South Kensington, London.

The Science Museum was founded in 1857 as part of the South Kensington Museum. Following the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park, Prince Albert suggested that the surplus profits derived from the popularity of the exhibition should be used to found a number of educational establishments close to the original site. The South Kensington Museum was the first of these, on land now forming part of the V & A. The Science Museum became a separate entity in 1909.
