The introduction of the Fox pressed-steel truck seems tohave stimulated the inventive faculties of car-builders in de-vising some substitute for it. Figs. 9 and 10 represent a formof truck recently patented by Mr. Edward Cliff, of Newark,N. J. The frame of this is to be made preferably of iron orsteel, forged or cast, and is made of an I sectional form, asshown at b of fig. 10. The frame, as will be seen, is madewith an open mouthed jaw at each end to admit the journal-box. Each jaw is closed by a removable bar, IT, which isfastened by bolts Jand Aat its upper and lower ends. Thejaws are made dee]) enough to receive a coiled or other spring,//, above the box. This has a central bolt, i, which passesthrough the truck frame. By screwing up the nut on thisbolt the tension of the spring is taken off of the box, and byremoving one of the bolts J or K the bar 11 can be swung. CLIFFS FHEICJI1T-CAR TRUCK. Open and the box removed. The truck bolster 11 is made ofan inverted f) shape and rests on top of the side frames and isbolted to them by suitable lugs. V V and b b, and with theholts b b. Instead of having a centre pin. the Upper and lowercentre plates arc made with suitable cup-shaped cavities andarc provided with a metal ball on which the car body restsand can roll. The cavities being made somewhat larger thanthe ball, the body and the truck can move slightly ill relation to each other. The patent is dated Octobci 89, and is num-bered 548,827.
