In 1887 he was electeda member of the house of dele-gates, and among other impor-tant measures was patron in thatbody of the bill which proposed, .„ , ^^,^^^as we have seen, to appropriate f/^ * ^annually the sum of $10,000 to ?^^^^^^ ^• the support of William and Mary <: ~-— ,_ college. He had the satisfaction ^ of seeing the bill made a law,and in August, 1888, was elected president of thecollege under the new organization. Though somehad their doubts of the success of the institution, fromwhich the current of patronage had been long di-verted, the result speedily vindicated the action ofthe legislature.
