A SLAVONIC MELODY. 223 After the second subject we have a modulation through D flatinto C, on which note there is a pedal for fifteen bars, withthe two violins in semiquaver passages over it, and laterstill the original jodel returns in the wind. For the restof the movement the music consists of variations of thethemes already given—&fugato on the principal subject, and asecond fugato with the subject in semiquavers ; and a passagein which the fiddles descend note by note from the high Gover a pedal in the basses, at the same time diminishing fromff to pp, and recalling a similar passage near the end of theopening movement of the work; a coincidence which, ifintentional, is of rare occurrence in the Symphonies. Thewhole ends with a very peaceful Coda, terminating with theoriginal jodel in the horns pianissimo, which might be sup-posed to indicate the retirement of the peasant band to adistance, if we were not brought to our senses by two veryloud and startling chord
