Operation Deep Freeze I - Eastwind on rescue mission to Little America. Near Little America Base 5, Kainan Bay, 400 miles from the Williams Air Operation Facility at McMurdo Sound the U. S. Coast Guard icebreaker noses her bow up to a level spot in the Great Ross Ice Barrier. Crewmen planted deadman anchors on the ice here for mooring the ship as she sidled up alongside the shelf. Preparations were being made to set ashore a Navy Otter plane for assisting in the search for another Otter missing three days with 7 Navy men. The flyers were headed for Marie Byrd Land when reported missing. (February 6, 1956). The Eastwind embarked from McMurdo Sound the previous day with a Navy Otter and a HO4S helicopter aboard to assist in the rescue mission. Aboard was Rear Admiral George Dufek, USN (Ret), Commander, Task Force 43, with his staff, having transferred his flagship from Navy's Arneb to the Coast Guard's Eastwind. Enroute to Little America the staff planned the rescue operation. Admiral Dufek had additional survival gear including food, tents, radio equipment and first aid kit, loaded into the Otter for air dropping to survivors of the missing plane when found.
