Viglius van Aytta (1507-1577) Spanish Emperor right hand 1564 by Jacques de Punder. Dutch, The Netherlands, Wigle van Aytta van Swichum was born Frisian, but went to Europe to study. He got to know Erasmus; his progressive ideas about humanism, in which man was central, appealed to him. Viglius became a professor in Ingolstadt, but eventually returned to the Netherlands. There he became chairman of the privy council of Charles V: a powerful man. Viglius is depicted here as Chancellor of the Order of the Golden Fleece
