Type specimen of Homo habilis (OH7), or 'handy man', showing skull fragments, a jaw bone and handbones. These hominid fragments were found in 1960 at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania, and were described in 1964. The excavation was under the leadership of Louis Leakey. Homo habilis, found in association with stone tools, is thought to be the oldest representative of the genus Homo and is dated at million years old.
