He was the eldest of ten children born toEpes Merchant ami Sally R. (Thomas) W., like most of the Cape Ann boys of thatperiod, was practically engaged in the fisheries untilhis majority, when he became a partner in his fathersbusiness under the firm-name of Epes Merchant & many years he was one of the j)rincipal fish-buyers, and his business reputation and mercantileintegrity were of the highest order. His knowledgeand judgment was often appealed to by the youngermasters, and his kind encouragement and sound ad-vice were often the foundation of successful business.
