Mumbai's most famous monument the Gateway of India commemorates the first visit of a British Monarch to India George V in 1911.


Ironically, when the Raj ended in 1947, this Stone Arch of Triumph became an epitaph: the last of the British ships sailing for England left from by Scotsman George Wittet in Indo-saracenic style that combines Gothic like flamboyance with Muslim Indian architectural features. Construction was completed in 1924. Complete with four turrets and intricate latticework carved into yellow basalt central dome is 48 feet in diameter and 83 feet above ground at its highest point.
