This act established the board of canal commissioners,under wdiose supervision the Pennsylvania canal and all its lateral 280 Internal Improvements branches was constructed. The act of 1824 constituted a tempo-rary l)oard for the pur])ose of ascertaining the most practicableroute for a main line canal, but the act of 1825 established the com-mission as a department of State government, and also disclosedthe legislative determination to carry into effect the great publicenterprise long advocated by the leading men of the State.
