An old wooden house in the Siberian town of Tomsk sinking below the road. A former trading hub, Tomsk is famous for its intricately carved wooden houses- built out of local wood by artisans who flocked to the town and competed with each other to create the most lavish of designs. The town fell into oblivion with the construction of the Trans Siberian railway which passed through nearby Novosibrisk instead. During the communist revolution, the Russian government converted the houses into communal apartments- crammed with up to 8 families each. Communism took its toll- upkeep on the houses was passed on and the houses fell into disrepair. This has been accelerated recently with Russia's economic boom and the pressure for flashy new real estate projects. Most of Tomsk's superb wooden houses have already gone- demolished and replaced with the usual high-rise. There are also some 1,800 left, which Tomsk citizens are now hoping to save and consequently used to create a tourism industry.
