Masses of old ant hill colonies grown over with grass creating a bumpy ant created landscape on earth mounds acid grassland


Each mound is created by a single colony of Yellow Meadow Ants possibly of 8,000 –14,000 individuals. The worker ants are 3 – 5 mm long and dig soil from below ground as they create a network of galleries and chambers. The soil is taken mainly at night to the surface where this excavated soil builds up into the age may roughly be determined as 1 liter of soil equates to one year.
