The purpose of the high-explosive battle drills is to allow the Marines to rehearse using their explosive weaponry and indirect firepower assets, increasing their ability to engage and suppress enemy targets that cannot be directly engaged with their service rifles. The unilateral exercise provides an opportunity for the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and 11th MEU to train in amphibious operations within the 5th Fleet area of responsibility. The 11th MEU is currently supporting 5th Fleet’s mission to promote and maintain stability and security in the region. ( Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Devan K. Gowans)
