Title page of Elemens de la Philosophie de Neuton (1738), Voltaire's popular guide to the theories expressed in Isaac Newton's less accessible Principia Mathematica (1687). Although best known for his literary achievements, the French writer Voltaire (1694-1778) lived in an age when it was still fashionable for artists and intellectuals to take an interest in science. His Elemens introduced France's educated middle class to Newton's laws of motion and the theory of universal gravitation.
