The 15th century single arch Ponte Vecchio or Old Bridge at Dolceacqua, Imperia, Liguria, Italy has a graceful 33 m / 108 ft ‘donkey back’ single arch spanning the River Nervia. It was described in February 1884 by French Impressionism founder Claude Monet as “un bijou de légèreté” (a jewel of lightness). Two days later, he painted both the bridge and the ruined 16th century Doria Castle, on the lower slopes of Monte Rebuffo, that dominates Terra, Dolceaqua’s old town.
