Paranthropus boisei skulls. Two reconstructions of Paranthropus boisei (previously Australopithecus bosei) skulls based on skull OH5 found at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania, in 1959 by Mary Leakey. These reconstructions show two different proposed forms of the mandible (lower jaw). The skull dates to million years ago. P. boisei is an extinct species of hominid that lived during the Pliocene epoch (around to million years ago) and forms part of the human evolutionary tree; although a divergent branch to that which led to modern humans.
