prayer flags or windhorse in wind at Namgyal Tsemo gompa (monastery) Leh Ladakh Himalaya Jammu and Kashmir India

Prayer flags, also known as wind-horses or Lungta, are hoisted on high points by Tibetan buddhists. They spread the word of Buddhism, act as wind-powered acts of prayer, attract good luck or merit and express gratitude. They are hung from tent poles, mountain passes, rooftops, monastery roofs, sites of pilgrimmage and stream and river crossings. The central image of the wind-horse usually carries The Wish-fulfilling Jewel. The flag may well have a person's name inscribed too. They come in the five basic colours of yellow, white, red, green and blue to symbolise the five elements, five senses and five wisdoms.
