IBL (Insertable B-Layer) installation into the inner detector of the ATLAS Experiment side C. ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) is one of seven particle detectors constructed at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The LHC, the world's largest and most powerful particle collider, began operating in 2008 at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory. This IBL subdetector, added to improve tracking abilities during particle collisions, is now the fourth layer in the inner detector region of the ATLAS experiment. The insertion was a carefully planned precision operation. Photographed on 15 May 2014.
