Chiesa di Santa Maria del Tiglio (St Mary of the Lime Tree), Gravedona, Province of Como, Lombardy, Italy: Como Romanesque church built in the second half of the 12th century of white Musso marble and blackstone from Olcio. According to tradition, it owes its name to the lime tree grown in the bell tower or campanile. The church of Santa Maria del Tiglio stands next to the parish church of San Vincenzo (Saint Vincent), near the shore of Lake Como. The lakeside land occupied by these churches was a sacred site from at least Roman times. The first Christian building here, a baptistery dedicated to St John the Baptist, was probably built over a pagan temple. The bell tower of Santa Maria del Tiglio has a square base and octagonal upper section with mullioned windows. Inside the church are paintings dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries.
