(Hajtna-toxylin and eosin.) a, Intima; b, Elongated and stellate fibroblasts; r, Newly-formedcapillaries. When little particles are torn away from thrombi by the blood-current, they may become impacted in the districts where the vesselsare narrow, and, fibrin being precipitated upon their surfaces fromthe blood, may lead to complete obstruction of the vessel involved(embolism). The embolus may subsequently undergo similar changesto those seen in a thrombus, especially purulent softening, ororganisation. The co7isequences of thrombosis and embolism depend upon thenature of the thrombus or embolus respectively, and of the area ofvessels occluded by them. As regards the latter, if the vessel affectedbe an artery, the circulation behind the obstruction (towards theperiphery) ceases immediately on the occurrence of the latter, while infront of the obstruction (centrally) the blood-pressure rises. If nowthe artery affected stil
